OTHUSITSE MOETI, the young academic go-getter of the Wrenchville High School (near Kuruman), was recently announced as the Wrenchville High School dux learner and matric 2015 valedictorian. Kalahari Bulletin interviewed him after he had received his awards.

What has been your greatest lesson in life so far?

“I have learned that you always get out what you put in.

“I have realised that all the sacrifices I have made for my academic work has earned me the results that I wanted.”

How would you describe your personality?

“I am naughty, funny, at times moody and short-tempered, hungry for success, a believer and Mr Serious.”

Who has had the biggest impact on your life and how?

“It definitely has to be the Northern Cape Citizen of theYear nominee, Tsepo Kgatlhane.

“Not only is he my teacher in Life Orientation, but he is also my mentor who continuously helps me with a view to reach my full potential.

“He also helps me to look for academic and leadership opportunities. Since I have known him, he has played the role of teacher, mentor, guardian and brother.”

What legacy would you like to leave behind?

“I have not really thought much about that, but one thing that I’d like to engrave in people’s heart is helping those in need with any kind of help.

“If you help others, you help yourself.”

What does it feel like to be named the Wrenchville High School’s Kumba Iron Ore dux learner and class of 2015 valedictorian?

“I feel honoured and blessed. Being a top achiever makes me believe more in my dreams and reminds me that dreams really come true. Like Albert Einstein once said: “Dreams are not the things that keep you sleeping. Dreams are the things that keep you awake.”

“This achievement is a promise that I can hang onto. A promise that I am heading into the right direction. Being valedictorian gives me an ambivalent feeling. On the one side I’m saying goodbye to my school and teachers and on the other hand I am leaving, feeling good that I am getting closer to making my dreams a reality.”

What will you miss most about school?

“My teachers.”

What are you passionate about?

“Helping people, which is why I want to pursue a degree in Medicine and eventually specialise in neurology.”

What does it mean to “be the difference”?

“It means giving back to the world in a unique or peculiar way. It means taking the road less travelled and empowering other young people through positive actions and model citizen behaviour.”

What is your favourite quote?

“It is the one by the Dalai Lama: ‘If you think you are too small to make a difference, you must try sleeping with a mosquito’.”
