All set for Pta, Soweto derby

BETHLEHEM. – Mamelodi Sundowns will face its neighbouring cup holder SuperSport United in a semi-final match of the Telkom Knockout Cup, while the Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will contest the other last-four fixture.

These games, which will decide which two teams will lock horns in this year’s cup final, will take place on the weekend of 7 and 8 November. The venues and times for the games are yet to be confirmed.

Sundowns went through to the semi-finals of the tournament on a high note, humbling Free State Stars with a 6-1 win in a one-sided game played at the Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem on Sunday afternoon (25/10).

The game was to decide who would join Pirates, Chiefs and United, who had already done the job a day before.

Pirates knocked out the struggling Maritzburg United by 2-0 at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday (24/10).

Steve Komphela’s troops narrowly beat Black Aces 2-1 before United sent the Absa Premier League rookies, Golden Arrows, packing on Saturday evening with a 3-1 defeat at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Pitso Mosimane, Sundowns’ head coach, said he was happy with the draw.

“Yes, I am happy with the draw. I think it is a balanced one. We will have a Pretoria and Soweto derby,” Mosimane said.

He said, however, that they had games to focus on before the semi-final match.

“First we need to focus a bit on the league – we are playing Polokwane City and Maritzburg United. We need to try and improve in the league.”

Mosimane said he was happy with the way his boys had responded against Stars.

He said scoring six goals had not been easy and added that it showed that goals were coming in future. “I will be happy if we can score goals like we did today,” he said.
