Assess situation with open eyes

THINGS are happening very fast and I want us to open our eyes and analyse and assess what is happening.

The politics of South Africa still yields many surprises. Defections and the formation of new opposition parties are at the order of the day and post-conference dynamics raise more questions than answers.

Our beloved country is trapped in factional battles. The parliamentary approach by some of the opposition is a matter for concern. One cannot help asking whether it is about principled governance or not. Perhaps Luthuli House will help us get a better understanding of what is busy unfolding.

The 2017 conference and the behind-the-scenes contest for power seem to lie behind all this instability. An example from history shows that the late Malawian president, Bingu wa Mutharika, broke away from his party to form another one. He eventually became president.

At first his followers were confused and did not understand the reasons for his decisions.

Another example is that of the Zulu King Shaka, who was a refugee from the Mthethwa confederacy. He later became a commander in chief of the Mthethwa state.

Many people thought the Mthethwa kingdom would continue after he defeated the Mdwandwe. As it turned out, however, he conquered all the surrounding tribes to form the Zulu kingdom.

It seems supporters do not always have an insight into the secret plans or stragies of their leaders
