A TEAM of the University of the Free State’s School of Medicine daily unremittingly works to save the lives of young children who have been born with heart defects by carrying out highly specialised interventions and operations on them.

One of the children is seven-month-old Montsheng Ketso who recently underwent a major heart operation to keep the left ventricle of her heart going artificially.

About two months ago, Bonizile Ketso was not sure how much longer her six-month-old baby, Montsheng, would live.

This was when she got the news that her baby had been born with a rare and serious heart defect and that her heart had already been damaged a great deal.

Today Bonizile sings and plays at every opportunity with her baby. She treasures these moments. Although baby Montsheng spent two months connected to machines in hospital, she had no trouble catching up on her development and she is crawling around
