WHOPPING R1,5 million is at stake in the 2015 Comrades Marathon.

The oldest ultra-marathon – ran between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal – will be held on Sunday (31/05) and will once again see hundreds of athletes across the globe competing for the prizes on offer.

The first South African citizen (man and woman) to complete the event will each receive R175 000. According to the race organiser, 15 966 men and 4 442 women, all South Africans, have registered for the 2015 Comrades Marathon.

A total of 348 men and 101 women from the rest of Africa and 1 109 men and 391 women from elsewhere in the world, entered.

This year the 90th Comrades Marathon takes place, an up-run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

The race will have six official cut-offs along the route.

Rowyn James, the Comrades Marathon Association’s (CMA) race director, announced that the follo-wing cut-offs have been confirmed and would form part of this year’s race rules.

“Due to the extra 877 m route deviation in the first half of the race, the previously advertised halfway cut-off of six hours has been exten-ded to six hours and 15 minutes so as to factor in the additional distance.

“The cut-offs are an important facet of the race and are there for the well-being of the runners.

“Should a runner not make any one of the cut-offs within the allotted time, they will not be able to complete the race within the overall 12-hour cut-off time. It is a sad reality for quite a few runners every year, but it is all for the runner’s own good,” said James
