FRANCO SMITH, the Toyota Free State Cheetahs coach, has insisted that their 31-73 loss to Xerox Golden Lions last month will have no bearing on this weekend’s Absa Currie Cup semi-final.

Cheetahs will face the Lions in the much-anticipated semi-final showdown and will be looking to redress the result last month at Free State Stadium when Cheetahs failed to deliver.

The Johannesburg men outmuscled and outscored the Free Staters by ten tries to five during the round robin fixture in Bloemfontein on 26 September.

Smith, though, said there is no lingering after-taste from the drubbing they suffered three weeks ago.

“We are not worried to face the Lions in their own backyard. They are a good side, but so are we. We are not going to be intimidated by their current form,” Smith told Express.

“We have made a few changes in our team since the last time we played against them. I think it is going to be a different ball game altogether on Saturday. They must expect a tough match. We are determined to win it and proceed to the final,” he said.

Cheetahs have a mountain to climb if they are to beat the Lions, who are yet to lose a match in the Currie Cup this year. But anything is possible in rugby.

Johan Ackermann’s men have won all their ten games and are on top of the log with 47 points.

They have beaten every single team in the Currie Cup this season.

Meanwhile, Cheetahs have only managed to win three matches in the competition. They have lost five of their matches and drew twice.

This game takes place at the Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg on Saturday at 13:45.

In the other semi-final match, the Vodacom Blue Bulls will battle it out against the DHL Western Province on the same day at 19:10.
