THE state-of-the-art Nu Metro cinema has officially opened in The Strip, Welkom.

The cinema complex cost just under R10 million and boasts five cinemas with two 3D and three 2D theatres. It accommodates around 600 people.

Nitesh Matai, marketing manager of Nu Metro Cinemas, says they are pleased to confirm that cinema ticket prices for the new Nu Metro Welkom Cinema Complex will be lower than at the other cinemas in major metropolitan areas.

Pieter Botha, Welkom Nu Metro manager, says a unique aspect of the movie theatres in Welkom will be the selection of lover’s seats to accommodate couples.

“Welkom’s new releases will be day and date on a par with the rest of the country,” Botha says.

Welkom, as the second largest city in the Free State, was identified for the latest cinema complex in the Nu Metro stable.

Matai says Nu Metro identified a definite captive audience for cinema in Welkom.

“We believe the critical mass is present for strong consumer support,” states Matai.

“Furthermore, with the development of The Strip and casino across the road, we are confident that the city is developing at an encouraging pace.

“Nu Metro Cinemas is excited to be a part of new business developments in Welkom, and will contribute in the form of worldclass movie entertainment for all residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Ari Abatzoglou, who is co-owner of The Strip in Welkom with his brother Johnny, says they are very excited about this new venture.

“Welkom needs something like this and I am confident that it will be a major success,” says Ari.

Ari and Johnny bought the Metro Cinema’s from Andrew Yianoulatos in the early 1990’s.

Depending on the support from consu-mers in Welkom, future plans also include the possible addition of new cinema features, such as large-format screens, as well as the premium SceneVIP offering
