BURTA DE KOCK, coach of the Free State Crinums, is optimistic that her side will successfully defend their Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League title.

Her girls opened their season account with a convincing 57-40 victory over the North West Flames in the University of Pretoria’s Rembrandt Hall on Friday (08/05), but they were brought down 40-45 by the Gauteng Jaguars in their second match at the same venue the following day.

“I would like to congratulate my team on a brilliant play against Flames on Friday. It was very important to win our first match of the season,” De Kock told Express.

“Despite our loss on Saturday (09/05), it has been a good weekend for us. We knew it was going to be a tough match against Jaguars, because they are one of the strongest sides in the league.

“Credit to my girls for making things difficult for them.”

This weekend the Crinums return to Pretoria to face the Southern Stings on Saturday (16/05) at 14:30 and the Golden Fireballs at 12:30. Both matches will be played in the Rembrandt Hall.

“The match against Jaguars is water under the bridge. Our focus now is on the next match. We’ll take it one match at a time.

“We are refusing to panic. We’ll bounce back to winning ways this weekend. It’s not about how you start, but rather how you finish.”

“We missed a lot of scoring chances against the Jaguars. But we have fixed all our mistakes at training. I told my girls that they should never make similar mistakes again.”

The Crinums will be minus captain Maryka Holtzhausen, Adele Niemand and Lauren-lee Christians – all of them will be away on national duty.

“The trio will be replaced by Sheri Duimpies, Alicia Puren and Khomotso Mamburu,” said De Kock
