Elderly show sports skills

2015-06-10 06:01

THE province has already started with the district-leg of the Golden Games for senior citizens 60 years and older.

Since 18 May enthusiastic elderly people from service centres in Kimberley, Richie and Platfontein had been hard at work to impress their coaches in their different sporting codes at the Galeshewe Stadium.

According to the district co-ordinator of older persons at the Department of Social Development, Matshidiso Kote, the activities on the programme got off to a good start.

“They are coping and are fit enough for the 17 different sporting codes.

“At least they do not find it stressful as they practise on a daily basis at their respective centres,” she added.

Amongst the different sporting codes that the elderly people were reported to be participating in were the relay race, duck-walk, dress-up race, ball pass and kick, ball relay, goal shooting, ring the stick, jukskei, rugby ball throwing, pegging washing and soccer.

She added that her team would now be travelling to other districts hosting similar games.

One of the participants, Lena Nizer (75), said that they loved and appreciated the attention that was being given to them in their old age.

“This way we can also keep our bodies fit,” she added cheerfully
