THIS season’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) top goal-scorer award seems to be heading to the Free State, with two local clubs’ goal poachers vying for the coveted accolade.

These are Free State Stars’ goal-getter Moeketsi Sekola and Bloemfontein Celtic’s Lerato Lamola.

History will be made if this season (2014-’15) the top goal-scorer award is won by a Free State club’s player.

Phunya Sele Sele’s roving striker Lamola is currently the leading scorer with 13 goals, followed by Ea Lla Koto’s Sekola on 12 goals.

The other challengers for the golden-boot award are Puleng Tlolane of Polokwane City on 11 goals, Cuthbert Malajila of Mamelodi Sundowns on ten goals and Kemit Erasmus with nine goals.

The contest for the 2014-’15 premiership top goal-scorer has now become a two-horse race. Both are favourites to scoop the award, based on their rich vein of form.

Lamola bagged goal number 13 when he netted for Celtic in their 2-3 defeat to Ajax Cape Town on Sunday (03/05) during a league fixture played at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo.

Sekola grabbed goal number 12 in Stars’s 2-0 hammering of Chippa United in a league encounter played on Saturday (02/05) at the Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem.

With the 2014-’15 PSL ending on Saturday (09/05) it is all in the hands of the Free State teams’ goal-getters, Sekola and Lamola, to make history by ensuring the award comes to the Free State.

The two strikers each have a golden chance to make it happen in the two remaining league fixtures of the PSL.

One of the remaining encounters is the intriguing Free State derby between the respective strikers’ clubs, Celtic and Stars. The two Free State teams’ last fixtures are on Saturday. Celtic will travel to relegation-bound Moroka Swallows in Dobsonville with Ea Lla Koto hosting the Mpumalangan Black Aces at the Goble Park Stadium.

The Free State derby, kicking off at 19:30, takes place on Wednesday (06/05) in the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein and is expected to be a showdown of the two golden boot award-vying goal-poachers, Sekola and Lamola.

Sekola is bound to bang in at least two goals to be at the advantage to be the first Free State team player to win the PSL top goal-scorer award and the same goes for Celtic’s striker Lamola.

If the Phunya Sele Sele man gets a goal in Wednesday’s derby and in their last league fixture against Swallows, the prestigious award will surely go to his cabinet. As for Sekola, he is compelled to unleash his very best, display his predatory ability and score in today’s derby to be on par with his counterpart.

If the two strikers end as joint top goal scorers, they will share the prize of the golden boot – still making history by becoming the first Free State teams’ players to win the accolade.

Both players will count good support from their respective teammates to accomplish the mission to clinch the top goal-scorer prize.

As the two Free State football giants face off today, Phunya Sele Sele will be hoping to extend its record of winning the derby, while Stars will look to claim the stakes to better their record in their derby
