FS not playing to full potential

EVEN though his side won their Vodacom Cup match against the Boland Cavaliers, coach Rory Duncan was not happy with the way they had played.

The Toyota Free State XV convincingly defeated the visitors by 52-15 in an entertaining match played at the Clive Solomon Stadium on Saturday (28/03).

“Certainly, we played much better than last week. But I thought we still didn’t play to our full potential. I believe we could have done much better,” Duncan told Express after the match. “We are certainly happy with the five points, but I am not overly happy with the way we played. But at the end of the day we won the match,” he added.

It was a good comeback victory for the Free Staters after losing their opening fixture against SWD Eagles by 33-17 in George, Western Cape, two weeks ago.

“From a set-piece point of view our line-outs were a lot better than last week. Our defence was also solid. When we attacked we were a little more direct, but we battled with momentum from the first and second phase,” said Duncan.

In their next encounter, the Free State XV will travel to Kokstad to face the Cell C Sharks XV on Friday, 10 April, at 15:30. “It’s going to be a very tough game. The Sharks are a good side and they have a lot of depth. But we’ll do a lot of homework on these guys,” the coach said.

After Saturday’s win, the Free State XV moved up to the fourth spot on the South Section log with five points after two rounds of fixtures. They trail log leaders Western Province by five points, who have collected ten points after two games.
