MORNÉ DIPPENAAR, coach of the Free State

women’s rugby team, has praised his players after they lifted the Women’s Inter-provincial League plate in East London.

The team defeated the Leopards 22-5 in an entertaining Section A final played in front of an appreciative crowd at the BCM Stadium on Saturday (12/09).

Three tries by Mellanie Smith and another one by Anzel Venter, as well as a conversion by Merriam Ntlhafu, led to the win. Dippenaar attributed the victory to the team ethic, as well as the support from the management.

“I’m so proud of the girls. We always believed that we could win if we performed well on the day,” Dippenaar told Express.

“The first half was a bit of struggle. The girls were too nervous and there was also a strong wind. We knocked a few balls and the ball handling was hectic. However, we managed to score three tries in the first half.

“The girls settled well after the break. They played their normal game and kept the ball in hand. As they always say, the rest is history.

“Everybody in the team is ecstatic about successfully defending our title. We are a champion team and must thank the Lord for our success.

“We also want to say a big thank you to the Free State Rugby Union for all its support.”

Dippies, as Dippenaar is affectionately known in rugby cycles, admitted that they had little information about the Leopards side before they played against them.

“We only played them once in a friendly last year. We didn’t even have their video. We just prepared like we normally do for any other match.

“I must say, the Leopards team has improved a lot from the last time we played against them.”

Free State were last Thursday given a warm sendoff by their male Cheetahs counterparts and the franchise management, as well as the rugby union.

“We want to thank everyone for messages of support, particularly Lindsay Mould for attending the final in East London. His presence at the match meant a lot to us.”
