YOU can feel the chill in the air.

Winter is here – and residents of the Mangaung Metro Municipality are doing everything they can to keep themselves warm during this harsh, biting winter weather that has the country in its grip.

In Phase 5, Bloemfontein, residents have come up with a plan to make fire to keep the chills at bay.

They burn used car tyres to warm themselves.

This, however, has safety risks and is unhealthy for the environment.

“We have no other option but to burn tyres to keep the cold away,” Katlego Marumo (29) told Express.

“There is always loadshedding in our area. It seems like Eskom is not keen to see us being warm this winter.

“This is the best way for us to keep ourselves warm during winter, especially if we are outside. We have neither gas heaters nor paraffin heaters in our homes. We have electric heaters in our homes, but of course they are useless if there is no electricity,” he said.

“My friends and I have been collecting used tyres so that we can burn them when it is cold. We really don’t want to freeze to death this winter. We are determined to do everything we can to chase away the winter cold. I don’t think burning tyres bothers anybody,” Marumo added.

Mohau Molebatsi (14) echoed his words saying that burning tyres was a cheaper way to keep warm because they can get used tyres at no cost.

“We don’t actually buy them. Our neighbours who own cars give us used tyres for free. So we try to collect as many of them as possible. We really enjoy catching up while sitting around the fire,” he said.

Other people in the area light up “imbawula” fires inside their houses just to keep warm.

An imbawula is a makeshift coal stove made out of a large tin with holes in the side.

It is designed to burn for a long time.
