Griffons chasing first win in cup

2015-04-30 16:57

FIRST DIVISION rugby side the Down Touch Griffons return to action against the Welwitschias from Namibia on Friday (27/03), hoping to register their first win in the Vodacom Cup.

The two clubs will battle it out at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek.

Both sides are looking for their first win in the competition.

This will be the Welkom-based team’s second fixture of the season.

The first, against the Steval Pumas, was played earlier this month.

The Griffons lost 18-58 against the Pumas, who are currently leading with 15 points, followed by the Xerox Golden Lions and the Vodacom Blue Bulls in second and third position respectively in the north section of the tournament, featuring 16 clubs.

The Welwitschias lost 3-53 to the Lions and 7-61 to the Pumas.

The upcoming game will be the Namibians’ third fixture in their backyard and it will be expected from them to conjure up some magic to turn around their dismal form in the tournament.

The Griffons will in turn be expected to capitalise on the hosts poor form in the competition.

Oersond Gorgonzola, Griffons coach, will rely on the likes of Vuyo Mboto and Johan van der Hoogt to spear-head his charge.

The tried and tested pair was influential against the Pumas, with each managing to score a trie.

However, it was not enough to earn them a win that would have seen them in the championship race.

With the result against the Pumas water under the bridge, the Welkom side will pull out all the stops in Friday’s tough fixture against the lacklustre Welwitschias.

The Griffons, Welwitschias and Assupol Limpopo Blue Bulls are yet to record a win in the championship
