THE Griffons rugby side’s campaign for glory in this year’s Vodacom Cup ended in disappointment as they failed to secure a top-four spot.

The Welkom-based side has lost the battle for a top-four finish by losing to the Lions, Blue Bulls, Pumas and the Leopards XV. These four clubs have qualified for the quarterfinal play-offs.

The Griffons had to win at least two games to keep alive the dream to win this year’s Vodacom Cup tournament. It was critical for them to win against the Leo-pards on Saturday, 2 May, and against the Lions last Friday (08/05). Wins over these two opponents, Lions and Leopards, would have propelled the Griffons into the top-four and they would have been among the four clubs in the Southern Section that qualified for the quarterfinals.

The Griffons, however, lost these two important matches, 59-12 to the Leopards and 36-20 to the Lions.

These results saw the local lads finish in position six in the Southern Section of the Vodacom Cup. The Griffons only managed two wins out of the seven matches they played this season. The Welkom boys will be among the spectators that will now watch the eight teams that qualified for the quarterfinals battle it out.

The boys in purple’s failure to bloom again this year, as was the case last year, means they did not do their homework properly to establish themselves as heavyweights in the Vodacom Cup.

The disappointing result means the Welkom lads will have to focus on rebuil-ding a formidable team in order to claim their stakes in next year’s Vodacom Cup.

The Griffons’ immediate focus now is to plan their campaign to defend their Currie Cup First Division title. This prestigious tournament commences in June
