IT is a crisp Wednesday morning and the phrase “time is money” is put well into action. Batricok Coetzee (29) and Mervin van Niekerk (27) are car guards in Nelson Mandela Drive and appear to be hard at work.

These two men are cousins.

Both of them state that they do not want to be car guards for the rest of their lives and that it is life’s obstacles that put them in that position.

“I want to do something better with my life. Maybe be a plumber, electrician or a driver,” says Van Niekerk.

“We are working hard and saving up so we can one day be better men,” says Coetzee.

The cousins say that they are just trying to earn an honest living to finance their dreams of improving the condition of their lives, rather than turning to crime or just sitting and waiting for handouts.

Van Niekerk say that on a good day they make R90 and on a bad day they make R60 by guarding cars throughout the day.

The cousins reveal to Express that they support eight people with their daily earnings. These eight people are Van Niekerk’s three sisters, two nephews, his girlfriend his cousin and himself. This family resides in Joe Slovo, just outside Bloemfontein.

The two come across as determined and genuinely motivated with a positive attitude towards life. Van Niekerk also states that people highly appreciate the service they offer and they make a huge difference in motorists’ lives.

“If you love something, you won’t want anything to harm it or you will not want to lose it, so people value us and the job we do,’’ says Van Niekerk
