GEORGE BERNARD SHAW, one of my favourite authors, wrote: “We are made wise not by the recollection of our past, but by the responsibility for our future.”

Battles over our past produce no victories for our future.

We spend sleepless nights worrying and debating about our past. Most of us are not ourselves, but we are somebody else.

However, whatever we are, we are already what God wants. The most appropriate way of offloading our stress is by loving ourselves.

An American soul group, The O’Jays, sings a song with the lyrics: “How can you love your brother when you don’t love yourself?”

I once took a journey by bus from Welkom to Cape Town. Just outside Edenburg (one of the Free State towns on the N1 south), there was a road block and the bus stopped. We were delayed because we were told that we had to get rid of excess baggage in the trailer.

Apparently there is a specific weight limit for the luggage which vehicles can carry, to ensure it reaches its destination without any hassles. Upon investigation, I discovered that heavy luggage makes the engine work harder and the vehicle uses more power and fuel when travelling.

It is important to consider that to enjoy the full benefits of life – we need to rid ourselves of excess baggage.

If we do not, we run the risk of over-burdening our hearts and subsequently we suffer a stroke.

Excess baggage could mean failed relationships, or love affairs that went wrong that sometimes leave one of the partners a single parent. Sometimes our neighbours hurt us. Often dreams are left unfulfilled. Sometimes we are hurt by our parents, our children, our bosses who let us down – even our churches that hurt us.

Any of these things can hinder us from living to our full potential.

Some people are afraid to quit the church. If your church does not have unity and brotherhood, abandon it. Your body is the temple of the Lord; it is not the four-walled building called a church.

Anger, bitterness, hatred and resentment are some of the causes of depression. We do not do ourselves any favours by not forgiving our offenders.

There is an interesting parable in the Bible that says Jonah joined sailors that were bound for Tarshish, even though he was destined to go to Niniveh.

Because Jonah joined the crew that did not go to his intended destination, he caused misery and chaos to his fellow sailors. The rest of the sailors had to face the storms that were not directed at them.

They lost some of their valuables because they were carrying someone on the ship who was not supposed to be part of their journey.

Always remember that the gift of the Lord brings joy to the heart and brings no sorrow to it.
