THE head coach of Bafana Bafana, Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba, has included Free State Stars goal-getter Moeketsi Sekola in the 22-men squad for the forthcoming Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa).

However, he has snubbed Bloemfontein Celtic’s Lerato Lamola despite the striker’s goal-scoring exploits.

Bafana Bafana’s technical team, led by Mashaba, has opted for Ea Lla Koto’s Sekola to add some firepower to the tournament.

The two sharp-shooters, Sekola and Lamola, have been instrumental at their respective clubs, Stars and Celtic.

The pair’s rich vein of form saw them dominate the just-ended 2014-’15 Premier Soccer League goal-scoring charts for its duration.

Ea Lla Koto’s Sekola has, however, beaten the contestants to the honours of the 2014-’15 PSL top goal-scorer with 14 goals.

Celtic’s star striker, Lamola, fell short by just one goal to be the Premiership joint top goal-scorer as he managed to bang in 13 goals.

Despite the stunning form of the Phunya Sele Sele goal-poacher, he seemingly did not impress Bafana’s technical team that favoured Sekola who already is at the preparatory camp at which mentor Mashaba sharpened his charges for the Cosafa Cup tournament.

The Stars talisman reported for national duty at the preparatory camp on Sunday (10/05), just hours after helping to steer Stars to a 2-all draw against Mpumalanga Black Aces at the weekend (9/05) in a league fixture played at the Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem.

Mashaba has instead included in the 22-men squad Celtic’s rising star attacking midfielder Thapelo Morena, Lamola’s teammate.

The Bafana Bafana mentor also has in his squad Stars defender Daniel Cardoso, making it two players from Ea Lla Koto.

Free State clubs have three players in the national team to do duty at this year’s Cosafa Cup Championship scheduled to run from 17 to 30 May.

The tournament is set to commence on Sunday (17/05).

The South Africa national senior men’s football side has lined up two build-up matches against Lesotho on Wednesday (13/05) and Thursday (14/05) in Maseru as part of their preparations for the Cosafa Cup competition.

South Africa’s other build-up for the tournament is against Malawi on 22 May in Rustenburg.

Bafana Bafana’s opening fixture is against Botswana on 24 May.

The two will meet in a quarterfinal outing scheduled for the Moruleng Stadium in the North-West Province.

Of the 22-men squad, 14 players ply their trade in the PSL, while the rest are from the National First Division, the ABC Motsepe League and academies
