THABANG MATUKA, Bloemfontein Celtic defender, is ready to work hard and fight for a starting berth at the club after his arrival from Maritzburg United.

Matuka made his debut for Siwelele against Orlando Pirates on Wednesday (26/08). The question is, however, whether he will get any regular game-time with Celtic, as he is competing for the left-back position with Tumelo Mogapi, who seems to have made the position his very own. “There is no team that doesn’t have competition for places and even if I had gone to another club in the PSL, I would have faced the same situation,” Matuka told Express. “There will be a battle to be in the starting XI, but that’s good. It helps the players to improve themselves and play even better, so that’s perfect. If I am in the team, of course I will fight for the shirt and make sure things go well for us. “I’m ready for the competition at Celtic and I also believe they will give me a chance to grow up in football. I have been longing to play for the club and face new challenges. I believe a team like Celtic will take my football to another level.” Asked about his thoughts on making his debut in the green and white colours of Celtic, Matuka said the feeling was priceless.

“It was a great feeling to be on the pitch. I have been wanting to play for my home team. The crowd was phenomenal.

“Winning the match was just the cherry on top. You know, I’m out of words.

“I thought I gave my best during the match, and compliments to my fellow teammates. We played as a unit and put in much effort.

“I would really like to thank the coach for the opportunity.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult match against Pirates. They are one of the biggest clubs in the PSL and the continent. They came at us from the word go, but we defended our box very well.

“I am really happy with the contribution I made in the match, but there is room for improvement.”

The 25-year-old said he had joined Celtic because he wanted to help them win silverware.

“Our fans deserve to see the team return to the top five and pick up some silverware this season. Celtic have gone a long time without winning something (the last trophy was the Telkom Knockout Cup in 2012), and that is our dream. The fans deserve it.

“We are an ambitious team. As one of the new signings, I came here to add value to the club. If us new players combine well with senior players, we can achieve beautiful things.”

Matuka made his professional debut in the colours of Maritzburg United in 2011. He was offered a three-year deal by Celtic during the off-season
