TREVOR MOKHUOANE, mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, was smiling from ear to ear at the Bloemfontein City Hall on Saturday (13/06) night.

It was easy to understand the reason for his happiness: He had just claimed his first-ever victory during Saturday’s face-off against Chaul Venter in front of an appreciative crowd.

It was more than a victory for the 27-year-old MMA fighter from Bloemfontein, who was declared the winner after three rounds.

“I’m really excited. This was my first-ever cage fight and winning it is something special,” Mokhuoane told Express after the fight.

“It was a difficult fight, but I prepared myself for it. It took me six weeks of hard work to prepare myself for the fight and my work has paid off. Without Warren (his trainer at the Industrial Fight Club) I couldn’t have done it. I thought I listened to his instructions throughout the fight.

“The fight was more of a learning curve than anything else. It has prepared me for my next fight, as I now have an idea what to expect in the cage. I’ll definitely be oozing confidence going into my second fight, probably in three months’ time.”

Warren Allison, Mokhuoane’s trainer, said he was happy that his fighters had swept the board on the night.

Apart from Mokhuoane, Janke Nortier and Marnu Basson also won their fights.

“I’m excited my three fighters have won tonight, especially Trevor, who registered a win in his first fight.

“I thought the trio fought well and followed my instructions during their fights, hence they came out tops. However, I believe there is still room for improvement for them. We are going to work hard at the gym to correct the mistakes they made during their fights,” Allison said
