New process

LEMIAS MASHILE, chairperson: Home Affairs Parliamentary Portfolio Committee:

THE Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs notes and welcomes the announcement that President Jacob Zuma has acceded to the National Assembly’s request to re-initiate the process of nominations, short-listing and interviewing of candidates to fill the vacancy in the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

The vacancy arose as a result of the resignation of Ms Raenette Taljaard as a commissioner.

The committee’s recommendation, as adopted by the National Assembly, was based on the need to ensure that the commission is as representative as possible of all South Africans, especially on the basis of gender and race.

The committee looks forward to engage with the report following the re-initiated process and is hopeful that the process will result in a more representative and diverse commission
