BETHLEHEM. - Free State Stars’ general manager Rantsi Mokoena is naturally pleased that the club’s coaching change has been yielding immediate results.

Ea Lla Koto relieved Kinnah Phiri of his duties in August following losses in their opening three games of the season. Stars subsequently hired ex-Maritzburg United boss Ernst Middendorp, who has supervised a four-game unbeaten run since taking charge at Goble Park.

“Relieving a coach of his duties is never an easy decision, but we had to act in the best interest of the club,” Rantsi told the club’s official website.

“As a club we don’t want to be chopping and changing coaches, but the dire situation we found ourselves in convinced us that it was time to inject fresh ideas. The boys have the fire in their bellies again. That’s what you want to see from your team.”

He added: “This is a very attractive club and the job of head coach is well sought after. We are delighted that Ernst Middendorp accepted. Did we set him any targets for the season? A coach’s stock rises and falls with the results he engineers on the pitch. Ernst is a consummate and very driven coach. He will want to do the best job he can for his professional pride. So in that respect his ambition matches our own as a club.” X
