2015-09-23 06:00

THE Portfolio Committee on Police is currently on an oversight visit in the Free State to assess the state of key policing issues in the province.

The oversight visit, which started yesterday, is scheduled to end on Friday evening at the Kopanong Police Station in Turflaagte, Bloemfontein.

Committee chairperson, Francois Beukman, said the purpose of this visit is to assess whether police stations in this province comply with relevant policies and procedures when executing their duties and how efficient they are in fighting crime.

He said the committee will kick-start its visit by visiting the Maseru border post to assess police efforts to maintain border safety and security and to be briefed on the challenges experienced at this border and plans to mitigate those challenges.

Police stations to be visited include Botshabelo, Park Road and Selosesha as well as Kopanong station in Turflaagte. The committee will also assess the effectiveness of police specialised units in the province.

Units such as Public Order Policing, VIP-protection and the Stock Theft unit are among the units that will be visited. There will also be unannounced visits to some of the police stations in the province
