Moeketsi Sekola was the big winner during the recent Free State Stars 2014-’15 awards ceremony, going home R85 000 richer after he scooped thee awards.

He was awarded with the player’s player of the season, Bonitas Medical Fund and the top goal scorer awards at the team’s award ceremony held at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg on Thursday night (23/07).

Katlego Mashego was deservedly named the player of the season and pocketed R80 000 in cash.

Other players who received awards were Paulos Masehe (most consistent), Dauda Diakite (most disciplined), Robert Sankara (chairman’s award) with Johnny Mathole and Reabetswe Rakoti sharing the Rookie of the Season Award.

Sekola said he was happy to win the three awards. He added except for the obvious one of top goal scorer he did not expect to win more trophies.

“There is nothing that would motivate me more than these. I am happy with what I have achieved, but credit must go to my team mates to keep pushing me to work hard,” said the happy goal poacher.

Mashego told Express Eastern Free State that he regarded himself very special because not every player was named player of the season.

“It shows that there are people out there who are watching when someone works hard.

“I didn’t expect to win it, because my ultimate goal last season was to save the team from relegation X which we did,” he said.

He said he would be sure to work hard to put the team in a better position this forthcoming season.

Rantsi Mokoena, the team’s general manager, said they had a tough season and added that it was time to award those individuals who contributed immensely to drive the team out of relegation.

“We lost in and out of the field last season. However, the players and the technical team remained positive and that earned us positive results at the end of the season.

“The players fought with everything they had at the time when we were ruled out,” he said.

Mokoena also referred to the loss of Richard Henyekane who died in a car accident on 7 April.

During the ceremony, Ea Lla Koto gave Henyekane’s family his framed team jersey
