Railway line gave life

2015-09-23 06:00

GOOD PEOPLE, let us look at what was, and still is, valuable in democracy, and also what has been disappointing.

Political changes in most cases have affected the way of life of many communities. Ward councillors have not come up with enough solutions to problems besetting the people. National and provincial leaders made promises, but kept silent on real issues.

In days past the former Spoornet, which is now Transnet, was a very valuable resource, regardless of the state of political oppression at the time. Many African people were employed and there were no ghost towns or informal settlements.

Regardless of the taxi-monopoly that has become a regular feature of our lives since 1994, some socio-economic matters have taken a back seat.

The Bethlehem railway yard has become like a ghost town. The logistical infrastructure has been destroyed and many jobs (both blue and white collar) have been lost.

Previously Bethlehem was alive due to that railway line, which in my opinion is still needed for economic revival.

I advise councillors to engage with other stakeholders with a view to let Transnet once more become an employer of the masses. Intabazwe and Harrismith are in the same boat because of railway stations that have closed down.

Let our government reconsider their actions and do something for eeconomic development
