Resignation of FS cricket coach a ‘major loss’

2015-08-26 06:01

RUDOLF STEYN has resigned as coach of the Free State Cricket Union provincial side to run his own business, the Sportweni Sport Academy.

“It is a major loss for Free State Cricket as Rudolf Steyn has played many games for Free State Cricket and the Proteas,” the Free State Cricket Union said in a statement released on Monday (17/08).

Steyn played three tests and one one-day international for South Africa in the mid-90’s. He made a solid test debut when he was involved in a 100-run opening partnership with Gary Kirsten.

His highest test score, 46 in 220 minutes, was made against New Zealand at Eden Park. An enthusiastic and good close-in fielder, he did duty with three provincial first-class teams before finishing his career with Northerns in 2002.

In the latter part of his career his strike rate did improve, recording five one-day hundreds to go with his 11 in first-class cricket.

Johan van Heerden, CEO of the Free State Cricket Union, said: “Although we are very disappointed about him leaving us, we wish him all the best with his business ventures and know he will do well.

“A new appointment has been made in Edward Mokoenanyana, which is currently employed by Grey College in Bloemfontein.

“Edward will commence duties on 1 September and we welcome him to the Free State Cricket family.

“Edward has been involved with Free State Cricket for over eight years and also served on our board. He has a level three coaching certificate and we are looking forward to the contribution he will make with the Free State team.

“His assistant will be Pena Motsoane, who will be doing his level three this coming year. This will greatly assist Pena in his personal development.

“Chippa Selesho has been appointed as the manager of the team and with his wealth of knowledge his duty will be to fine tune the new management team into a winning combination,” concluded Van Heerden
