SOUTH AFRICA were made to dig deep to defeat a stubborn Wales in the quarter-final match of the Rugby World Cup on Saturday (17/10), but they responded to the challenge in superb fashion to set up an intriguing semi-final clash with New Zealand this weekend.

The prize on offer will be a place in the final of the tournament against the winner between Argentina and Australia, but to achieve that, the Springboks will need to slaughter the highly-rated All Blacks at Twickenham on Saturday (24/10) at 17:00.

The Springboks saw off the Welsh by 23-19 in a come-from-behind quarter-final victory, while the All Blacks smashed France by 62-13 to claim their semi-final berth.

South Africa have what it takes to beat New Zealand, but it won’t be an easy stroll in the park – they will have to sweat blood for their win.

In 1980, a group of no-name collegiate ice hockey players had the insurmountable task of taking down the almighty USSR in the Olympic semi-finals.

The Americans pulled out the win in that particular game, in what was later dubbed “The miracle on ice”. It is widely considered to be the greatest upset in sports history.

Prior to that match, head coach, Herb Brooks, delivered an inspirational speech to a team that no one thought had a chance of winning that encounter.

“Great moments are born from great opportunity. And that’s what you have here, tonight, boys. That’s what you’ve earned here tonight. One game.

“If we played ’em ten times, they might win nine. But not this game. Not tonight. Tonight we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can!

“Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players. Every one of you. And you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It’s over.

“I’m sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw ’em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it.”

South Africa need to have the same kind of mentality going into Saturday’s match. They need to believe in themselves more and be in the right frame of mind for the match.

New Zealand may be the favourites to win this Rugby World Cup, but they can be beaten
