School can sing with Pharrell

2015-07-22 06:01

THIS September, one school singing group in South Africa is going to get the opportunity of a lifetime to perform live, on stage, with Pharrell Williams.

Woolworths, in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, will be hosting a first-of-its-kind private concert for its WReward members and one singing group will get the chance to appear on stage with Pharrell and win a cash prize to the value of R100 000.

To take part, school singing groups are invited to submit audition videos of the group performing a song that inspires them.

The top ten finalists will be chosen by an independent panel after which the final selection of the top three will be made by Pharrell Williams himself.

To enter, schools have to put together a singing group of between five and 20 learners, aged between eight and 18 years old. It does not have to be an official choir.

They should film the group performing a song of their choice, load the song on YouTube and send their full entry (along with all their details) to singwithus@woolworths.co.za.

Entries close on 31 July. Schools must please view the full competition rules online at www.woolworths.co.za/areyouwithus (under the Sing With Us section).

The prize for the top-performing school is R100 000 in cash and the opportunity to perform live with Pharrell. The second prize is R50 000 cash and the third prize is R25 000 cash for the school.

Last year’s winner, the Riebeeck College Girls’ High School from Uitenhage, Eastern Cape, took the R100 000 grand prize with their rendition of Asimbonanga, and were lucky to perform in the Woolworths tribute video with Johnny Clegg.

Second place went to the Walmer High School’s Masifunde Youth Choir from the Eastern Cape. They were closely followed by third-place winners, the Curro Hillcrest Christian Academy from KwaZulu Natal
