Two sentenced for rape and theft

THE Welkom Regional Court has handed hefty prison sentences to two out of three men for raping a woman and theft in September 2013. The two accused found guilty on their recent appearance are Peter Nkomo (21) and Kamohelo Sehlabaka (25).

The third suspect is reported to be on the run. WO Malebo Khosana, spokesperson of the Thabong police, said the two convicted rapists would not disclose the whereabouts of the third suspect.

Nkomo received a lesser sentence of 20 years for rape and two years for theft while the second accused, Sehlabaka, received a life sentence for rape and five years for theft. Their conviction and sentencing ended the 18-month trial.

The court found the two men guilty of raping the victim, a 48-year-old woman, and stealing her belongings. The three men sexually assaulted the victim at her residence in Extension 18, a new residence near Bronville, on 14 September 2013 at about 04:00.

The victim testified in court that Sehlabaka had gone to her place on the ill-fated morning looking for her daughter whom he had a love affair with. The accused wanted his CD from the victim’s daughter who was absent. The victim testified that she had let Sehlabaka in to search for the CD which he then found.

Upon finding the CD, she said Sehlabaka had whistled and two men entered the house and began raping her. The complainant testified that upon raping her, the three men had taken her groceries, cellphone, suitcase with clothing and a blanket all valued at about R2 075 and then fled the crime scene.

Sehlabaka and Nkomo were busted hours later at their respective homes in Bronville. The police discovered the victim’s stolen items, including the mobile phone, at Sehlabaka’s home
