IT is the well-kwown radio commentator Cebo Manyapelo of Motsweding FM who made famous the words “in football there is no therefore”.

This played down in Kimberley last week as nine teams from nine provinces vied for two positions in the national first division and a bonus of being handed R1 million and R500 000 cheques from the Motsepe Foundation for the teams that finished at the top of their groups and played in the subsequent final.

Against all expectations it was Mbombela United FC and Mthatha Bucks who gained promotion after brushing aside fancied teams such as Roses United FC, Glendene United FC, Magesi FC and North-West Shining Stars.

For Mthatha Bucks the promotion to the NFD brings back old memories of a team that used to mesmerize PSL teams and produced high-profile players such as the Mugeyi brothers. Sturu Pasiya, the chairperson of the team, saw in disbelief as his team descended quickly down to the Vodacom league.

Now they have a chance to redeem themselves and work their way up to the big league where the monthly payment is reportedly around R3 million per team.

However, the NFD is not going to be easy this season as big teams such as Moroka Swallows and Amazulu have been relegated and are sure to give other teams in the same league a run for their money.

Mbombela United FC was the ultimate winner of the R1 million prize as they beat Mthatha Bucks 2-1 in the final.

In presenting the prizes and medals, the chairperson of Safa, Dr Danny Jordaan, thanked the Motsepe Foundation for their unwavering support of soccer and he thanked the Northern Cape for having hosted a successful tournament.

He mentioned that, to prove the success of the tournament the two teams who were promoted last year finished in 11th and sixth position respectively.

The Motsepe Foundation was represented by its deputy chairperson, Dr Precious Motsepe, and her son Phenyo who brought the cup to the stage. The Northern Cape was represented by Hungry Lions from Postmasburg and like Steach United before them, they did not manage to cause an upset
