Perseverance, commitment and being goal-orientated is how a student from Olifantshoek managed to complete her university degree and receive seven distinctions.

Desiree Boesak graduated from the University of the Free State (UFS) in September this year and obtained a degree in BA Management.

She commenced her studies in 2012 with a bursary she had received from the Assmang Khumani Iron Ore Mine.

Boesak says the Social Enterprise Development (SED) Khumani Bursary made a huge contribution to her life.

“Without the SED Bursary, I wouldn’t have been the successful citizen that I am today. I now have the opportunity to make something of myself and my life and it is all thanks to the SED Bursary Scheme.

“I will forever be grateful for the fact that I have been part of something so vibrant and significant.”

Boesak said her journey throughout her studies was not all smooth sailing.

“#FeesMustFall campaign was a big stressor, because most of our exam time was taken up by the crisis, but through perseverance and being committed to my goals, I made it.

“Today, through all the hard work, all the sweat, I am proud to say that I am the first university graduate in my family and one of the few in my local community, Olifantshoek. I have to say, being focused and goal-orientated paid off in the end.

“I managed to achieve seven distinctions throughout my studies. I can now provide for my family, especially since I was raised by a single unemployed mother.”

Boesak also shared a few tips for other students and learners.

“To any university hopefuls out there, you can make it. Get a goal and keep your eyes fixed on what you want to achieve.

“I will forever be grateful to Khumani for giving me a bright future, a future where I can make a difference and help someone else in the community become great.

“I am also happy to announce that not only did SED give me a bursary, they also offered me an opportunity of a lifetime as one of the graduate trainees on the SED Bursary Programme. I have been expanding my skills and this opportunity leaves room for so much more. I look forward to a future with SED, as they have already blessed me with so much.”

Other students who also received these bursaries and graduated are Joanna Nazare, who obtained a B Tech degree in Tourism Management from the Central University of Technology (CUT) and Thabo Semana, who obtained a diploma in Mechanical Engineering at CUT.
