Action taken against drugs

2016-03-23 06:00

THE Mangaung Metro Municipality has launched a local drug action committee in the bid to curb drug abuse in the district.

In 2013, the mayor of the Mangaung Metro, Thabo Manyoni, held the Initiation Schools Lekgotla in partnership with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Health.

Manyoni said, amongst other reasons, this gathering was to deal with illegal initiation schools and the prevalence of drugs amongst the youth, specifically in Botshabelo.

Since the lekgotla, the situation has improved, and together with the provin- cial Departments of Social Development

and Health, the city has made inroads against illegal initiation, the mayor explained.

“Illegal initiation takes the form of the youth abusing drugs and abandoning school, which results in criminal activity within the area of Botshabelo,” said Manyoni.

Recently, the city received reports of the prevalence of drug abuse in Bloemfontein, with troublesome areas being Heidedal and Kings Park.

This has necessitated the city, together with the provincial Department of Social Development, to adhere to legislation by launching the Mangaung Local Drug Action Committee (LDAC).

The LDAC is a committee established at a local level by the municipality to give effect to the national drug master plan.
