Athletes running for big cash prizes again

2017-08-30 06:00

This year’s Free State O.R. Tambo Marathon is scheduled for 15 October in Bloemfontein. It will be the second time this race is held.

The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation has announced that registrations for the marathon are now open online.

Registration and details can be accessed on the website at www.fsortambomarathon.co.za. The deadline for registration is 29 September at 15:00.

The race is named in honour of Oliver Reginald Tambo, who was a prominent and renowned ANC leader.

The marathon is staged in October, as this is the month of his birth. The inaugural race was staged in April last year. The race is a qualifier for the 2018 Two Oceans Marathon and the Comrades Marathon.

Funded by the Free State Department of Sport, it will be hosted in collaboration with the Free State Sport Confederation, Free State Athletics, Manguang Athletics and the Pamoja Athletics Club.

The department has stressed that only online entries will be accepted to ease registration and timekeeping.

The objective of the marathon is to enhance and promote social cohesion, promote nation building and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

The department has added sub-category races for the age-dependent in which athletes can participate. Participants will compete in three categories: 42,2 km, 21,1 km and 10 km. The marathon will start and finish at the Mangaung Athletics Stadium.

Prize money ranges from R1 000 to R80 000. Both first-position male and female winners will each receive R80 000. Cash prizes for top-ten finishers in the main race range from R60 000 to R8 000.

The winner of the 21,1 km male and female category will receive R30 000. Prizes for top-ten finishers range from R20 000 to R1 000.

The winners of the 10 km section for men and women will each take home R15 000. Prizes for top-five achievers range from R12 000 to R3 000.

The objective of the marathon is to enhance and promote social cohesion, promote nation building and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
