The Northern Cape Department of Social Development scooped up a bronze award at the annual Batho Pele Awards ceremony for the best performing provincial department.

The ceremony was hosted by the Minister of Public Service and Administration, Adv. Ngoako Ramathlodi. The awards recognise hard work, good leadership and dedication by public servants and their willingness to go the extra mile in serving the public. It also forms part of efforts by government to create a strong and capable state.

This was not the only award the department received. According to its MEC, Gift van Staden, department head Ichabod Manyane was also named as the Best Performing Head of Department at the awards ceremony.

The department has also achieved a clean audit report for the 2015-’16 financial year from the Auditor General. This is the fourth successive year it has received such a report.

According to Van Staden, these were only some of the awards received from different monitoring bodies. He encouraged his staff to continue to focus on service delivery.

He attributed the department’s achievement to their willingness to provide services where they are needed most.

“Excellence must continue to become a habit in his department. Our goal is to serve and reach out to our communities in the best possible way,” he said.

The acting HOD, Ichabod Manyane, said the the department’s success can also be attributed to the past leadership.

“We must continue to build the foundation that has been laid by the past leadership and make the best use of the limited resources that we have.”

In continuing the department of social development’s culture of bringing efficient service to the people, Manyane encouraged the staff to continue to specialise in their different fields to promote a better life for all.
