’n Vernietigende brand wat Woensdag (13/09) by die Dronfield-wildplaas buite Kimberley ontstaan het, het meer as 6 000 ha verwoes.

Piet Oosthuysen, bestuurder van De Beers se eiendomsportefeulje, het gesê die brand het omstreeks 09:30 op die dag uitgebreek.

“Ons meen dit het aan die oorkant van die N12-pad ontstaan. Die wind was so sterk dat die vlamme oor die pad versprei het. Die wind het ons rondgegooi. Dit het kort-kort van rigting verander.”

Oosthuysen is dankbaar dat boere en werkers van die Petra-diamantmyn die brand help blus het. Hy reken op ’n tydstip was daar meer as 40 voertuie met mense wat kom help het.

“Die vrywilligers was wonderlik. Sommige mense het selfs van Douglas gekom. Die Sol Plaatje-munisipaliteit het ook ’n brandweerwa gestuur wat die N12-roete gepatrolleer het. Hulle wou keer dat die brand oor die pad spring.”

Beryl Wilson, dierkundige by die McGregor-museum wat aasvoëls bestudeer, is verlig dat net ’n handvol aasvoëlneste beskadig is.

“Die kuikens sal nou sowat vier weke oud wees. Dalk sal hulle van vlamme of rookinaseming doodgaan. Tog broei sommige aasvoëls later as ander. Vanjaar het ons sowat 106 aktiewe neste in die kameeldoringbome.”
