Senior players at Bloemfontein Celtic look set to share the captaincy role following the club’s introduction of the rotation system.

Already no less than four players have worn the captaincy armband since the departure of former coach Serame Letsoaka last month.

Against SuperSport United in the Absa Premiership fixture on Sunday (04/12), midfielder Musa Nyatama captained the team after fellow teammate Alfred Ndengane.

The rotation of captaincy followed a disciplinary action and a fine to keeper Patrick Tignyemb, the longest serving player in the current Phunya Sele Sele squad.

The Cameroonian shot stopper was confirmed at the start of the current season of 2016-’17 as the obvious choice to lead Celtic. He had taken over from departed Bevan Fransman who was skipper for the rest of the 2015-’16 season.

Interim coach Lehlohonolo Seema stated that all senior players at Celtic would be charged to captain the club during the season – not clarifying what influenced such a decision.

The Lesotho-born player has had the privilege to captain Phunya Sele Sele throughout the seasons during his tenure, except when side-lined by injury and suspended after accumulating bookings in yellow cards.

Seema’s current interim co-coach and one time teammate John Maduka also captained Celtic through the seasons during his tenure.

Equally so, the vice-captain would take over in absence of Maduka.

Contrary to that tradition, Phunya Sele Sele are rotating the captaincy, with senior players given preference according to the explanation given by Seema, who left Celtic to join Orlando Pirates before he returned to join the technical team.

Another noteworthy former Celtic skipper is Thabo Nthethe, who left the club in 2014 to join the reigning premiership champions. He was captain for the longest term during his term at Phunya Sele Sele until he left with Fransman, then entrusted with the captaincy role. The former Kaizer Chiefs and Moroka Swallows towering defender left Celtic for Maritzburg United at the beginning of the current Premiership season.
