The Mittah Seperepere Covention Centre in Kimberley was filled to capacity for the MTN Joyous Celebration that was held here last Saturday. This was in stark contrast to the poor support the event received in the past.

Of course, Joyous Celebration did not disappoint their fans, who came from as far as Botswana to witness their final performance before heading to America to record their next album.

According to concert organiser Ziki Molusi, collaboration with local gospel groups proved to be the best move, as they brought large groups to witness the action.

He said the overwhelming support was proof enough that the Northern Cape has become firmly established as a preferred venue for the group’s performances.

Molusi believes the staging of this kind of event has the potential to boost tourism and local economic development. It also shows that the province has the capacity to host serious events.

“The fact that we also experienced the presence of white people, coloureds and Indians is prove enough that our government is indeed working on nation building and social cohesion,” added Molusi.

Molusi also expressed his gratitude by highlighting that “if there is no crowd, there is no event”.

“This is not about me. I am just facilitating the process, as funding comes from local government. It is for the community.

“It is good for development, as it boosts local groups’s confidence in such a manner that they can be motivated to do the same.”

“The more reason for such good support was the fact that this specific performance was a milestone of 20 years of unbroken performance and recordings by MTN Joyous Celebration.

“They never disappointed the Northern Cape before. They always delivered on their promises.

“I am also grateful for our province to have a venue such as Mittah Seperepere, that fits the performance of such a nature.”

He expressed the hope that MTN Joyous Celebration would consider coming here to do some of their future recordings.

He rubbished reports that the convention centre did not have enough seating capacity, because people had deposited their bags and cooler boxes on chairs.

“The convention centre has the capacity to seat 2 500 people and the show sold 98% of its tickets,” he revealed.

In response to whether he might have to use another venue to host the annual Concert, Molusi said: “You never know what the future holds.”

However, he regretted the lack of cooperation and selfishness displayed by some people who refused to share space with others. He concluded by encouraging the private sector to come on board to boost arts, culture and heritage in the province.
