Celtic kick off to glory

2017-04-05 06:04

Bloemfontein Celtic are hopeful to continue their quest to renew cup glory by doing well in the Nedbank Cup.

Phunya Sele Sele lifted the presti-gious trophy in 1985 during the era of the late Dr Petrus “Whitehead” Molemela after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over African Wanderers at the Ellis Park Stadium.

The Mangaung giants’ quest for cup glory has seen them reach the last-16 stage of the prestigious championship which they won 32 years ago under their erstwhile sponsor, Mainstay Cup.

On Sunday (09/04) Celtic will continue their mission for glory when they host National First Division (NFD) outfit Mbombela United in the Nedbank Cup last-16 stage at the Dr R.P. Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00.

The hosts will strive to shake off the tag of once champions who do not have the pedigree to reclaim the glory of the lucrative trophy in recent years.

Phunya Sele Sele overcame Buya Msuthu by 2-0 to reach this stage of the tournament while United saw off Free State third-tier league side Days FC by 5-2.

Last year Celtic crushed out in the last-32 stage when they narrowly lost by 0-1 to Bidvest Wits.

As a tribute to late Molemela, Phunya Sele Sele are bound to unleash their best against United.

United are among the eight clubs in the bottom half of the NFD and so are their Premiership opponents Celtic, in the relegation with 22 points.

Phunya Sele Sele are still confident to do well against United after inspired by their hard-fought away 1-0 victory over Polokwane City last Sunday.

Celtic also have the edge of their vociferous supporters over United.

Celtic will depend on instrumental midfielder Musa Nyatama for inspiration whilst United will look up to Siyanda Khumalo. Khumalo was man of the match in his team’s elimination of Days.

Complacency in Celtic camp will be detrimental to their mission giving the late Molemela a deserving farewell.

Tickets are available at R40 for adults and R15 for children under 12 at the Bloemfontein Celtic office.
