Bloemfontein Celtic women’s football team reigned supreme once again when they won the Free State stream of the Sasol Women’s League.

Unchallenged provincially, the women’s outfit lifted the trophy after beating the Villiers-based Ace Milan with 3-0 at the Free State championship play-offs final, staged at the Bronville Stadium in Welkom on Saturday (22/10).

The Bloemfontein-based women’s team’s victory extended the record to nine wins in the Free State women’s league. The Free State championship also decided which eight teams qualified for prize monies for the current season.

Led by Motale Lisine, the Bloemfontein women’s team rejoiced in becoming the first club in the Free State to win a coveted floating trophy and a gold medal introduced by the sponsor and the South African Football Association (Safa).

The trophy and medals form part of the sponsor’s and the football federation’s innovation aimed at improving women’s football. For the past eight years, only the provincial winner received prize monies.

The current championship was contested by the stream B winner and Milan, the stream A winner. The two faced off to determine this year’s champion.

Milan, from the tiny town of Villiers, took home R30 000 and a silver medal for their effort as the champion walked away with a gold medal, the floating trophy and R50 000 in cash.

The champions will represent the Free State at this year’s national final of the Sasol Women’s championship set to be played during December.

Tsunami Queens received a bronze medal plus R25 000 as third place achievers after beating the Simunye Ladies with 3-2. The latter got R20 000 for finishing in fourth place.

Black Urban bagged R17 000 as fifth place winners after a 2-1 win over the Central University of Technology, who received R16 000 as sixth place achievers.

Kovsie Ladies took home R15 000 for their effort to finish in position seven after a 2-1 win over Happy Ladies, who walked away with R14 000 for finishing in position eight.

The Free State Sasol Women’s League has 16 women’s clubs, divided into two streams. Each stream has eight teams who compete on a home and away basis in the league.
