THE Black Converse Youth Centre in John Daka Phase 2 will be launched on Saturday, 18 June.

The centre is run by the Black Converse Pantsula dance crew.

The treasurer of the group, Joey Steenkamp, said it would serve as a dance academy and skills development centre where educational and awareness programmes would also be presented.

The centre’s mission is, amongst others, to work in partnership with the community, business and government and to strive for excellence in meeting the needs of the youth.

Dance training in pantsula, hip-hop, gumboots, traditional, spiritual and natural dances are part of the five key focuses.

Training and skills development will be catered for as the youth are invited to use the centre to do their homework.

Steenkamp said the centre would host awareness programmes on a weekly basis between 09:00 and 17:00.

“We are creating a platform where the youth can express themselves, build self-esteem and where they are trained to sustain and live a positive lifestyle.

“We are providing programmes to improve the physical, mental, emotional health and well-being of individuals.”

The centre provides a safe, caring and suppotive environment to community members whilst promoting cross-cultural understanding.
