Change cannot be avoided

Any change is difficult. It does not matter what change it is.

It could be a new relationship status, such as marriage, divorce, or a new boy or girlfriend.

It could be a new place to live in, such as a hostel or living with family, in-laws or a spouse.

It could be a new leader, a priest, a boss. The change can even be a new law.

The more we as black people become affluent, the more we are able to do things which were reserved for the whites or the rich.

For example, when we flock to the suburbs, our richer friends leave for the golf estates. The more we go to formerly model C schools, the more our richer cousins do private schooling.

Now we are into cruises and the colour of the people during these cruises is slowly changing.

This pattern repeats itself in all situations, churches, schools, shops, and more.

It becomes difficult to accommodate others who are not like you.

I am staying with this young, very beautiful girl, but fortunately she is not aware that she is beautiful.

When she came to stay with me in January, she was so bubbly and talkative.

Slowly she is going into her shell. Why, I wonder.

I have tried to find out why. Am I too strict? Am I difficult to talk to or stay with?

At the end I came to the conclusion that maybe it is change.

She is in a new house, a new environment with new rules and maybe she feels overwhelmed.

When changes are introduced in our churches, people remind us that they have been in that church for more than 50 years.

But in five decades, it is unavoidable that things change. The church is part of society. Churches also have to evolve, or they will die.

The youth are the future and they want things diffe-rently and are technologically inclined.

The oldies do not want any change at all.

That is how we have been doing it in 1950 and it will remain like that in the next 50 years, they say.

In the next 50 years, you will be dead.

My supervisor says you adapt or you die.

Any change will bring uncertainty and uneasiness.

However, you must find a way to deal with it.

A new commander will come with his or her own way of doing things.

Instead of resisting change, check how you can cooperate and adapt.

Why are we so afraid of doing new things or thinking outside the box?

If it is not broken, why fix it?

However, if you do not develop and come up with new things by the time the old things are broken, it will be impossible to fix.

Rather plan ahead and think of the future.

I was in China and was shown new highways which were unused. I was told they are planning 20 years ahead.

Now with us, we are reactive. We thrive in crises.

Change is good, because with change, you grow.

New things have to germinate and blossom for life to go on.
