Child welfare in dire straits

2017-04-26 06:01

The dire financial situation facing Child Welfare South Africa (CWSA) has prompted the start of a fundraising RU1 campaign.

Rose Cloete of CWSA says the initiative has been created to establish a structurally, financially strong and independent organisation to ensure the future of the organisation through the RU1 Endowment Trust.

To achieve this goal, CWSA asks the public and private sector to make contributions, be it R12, R120, R1 200, R12 000 or R120 000 per annum.

She says the private sector and companies can contribute as part of their allocation toward community social investment.

“The fundraising campaign seeks to improve the financial position of Child Welfare South Africa and to ensure that it continues to operate. CWSA has been experiencing recurring annual shortfalls. These had been addressed through fund raising campaigns such as Red Nose Day, which came to an end in the 2001-’02 financial year,” says Cloete.

She said the organisation had been depending on Lotto and the Department of Social Development for funding, “but the loss of Lotto funding in 2016 has plunged the organisation into a financial crisis without means to meet all its commitments,” says Cloete.
