Limakatso Mahasa, Free State MEC for social development handed over two day care centres on Monday, 31 October.

The hand-over events wrap up activities held during October to celebrate social development.

The Naledi Day Care Centre is located in the township of Phiritona in Heilbron and the Tswelopele Day Care Centre is in Mamafubedu in Petrus Steyn.

The centres are part of the Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme. This is a key programme for both the National Development Agency (NDA) and the Department of Social Development, with a statutory obligation as stated in the Children’s Act, No. 38 of 2005, to take care of children.

The latest additions increase the number of centres to nine in the two towns, catering for 530 children in Petrus Steyn and 772 in Heilbron. The centres cater for children up to the age of five years.

Lerato Tlhapuletsa, department spokesperson, said the department had allocated R1 933 032,32 to all centres in Mamafubedu and R1 810 101,06 to those in Heilbron. She said the money would pay for food, practitioners’ stipend and general administration.

Tlhapuletsa said the department had spent R10 million on ECD infrastructure developments in the Fezile Dabi and Thabo Mofutsanyana districts so far this financial year (2016-’17).
