Choirs getting ready for festival

CHORAL MUSIC groups are bracing themselves for the 2016 Old Mutual National Choir Festival. The festival features more than 100 choirs from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Swaziland.

This annual choral competition is one of the longest running and is regarded as the most successful choral music event on the sub-continent.

The choirs will be competing in four categories, performing ten prescribed songs.

  • Large Category Western Pieces:

1. “Voici des roses” and “Songe de faust” from La damnation de faust by Berlioz.

2. “Rex tremendae” and “Sanctus” from Requiem by Berlioz.

3. “Inflammatus” and “In sempiterna saecula” from Stabat Mater by Rossini.

  • Large Category African Pieces:

1. “Kwabanjalo” by J.S.P. Motuba

2. “Bulang Dikgoro” by J.S.P. Motuba

  • Standard Category Western Pieces:

1. “Ronde des paysans” from La damnation de faust by Berlioz.

2. “Chant de la fete de paques” from La damnation de faust by Berlioz.

3. “Agnus dei” from St Cecilia Mass by Gounod.

  • Standard Category African Pieces:

1. “Mokgosi ga se molaletsa” by H.K. Pule.

2. “Selelo sa setŠhaba” by H.K. Pule.

The festival will get underway with the Gauteng regional championship at the Mosaic Theatre in Johannesburg on 6 August. The Northern Cape leg is on 21 August, followed by the Free State leg on 17 September.
