A TOTAL of 22 parties in the Free State registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and contesting in the 2016 municipal election, have committed to the Electoral Code of Conduct. The parties, big and small as well as newly formed, signed the code of conduct at a ceremony in Bloemfontein last Friday (10/06). They have pledged to abide by the electoral code with 48 days remaining before eligible voters cast their ballots for parties of their choice.

Political parties have pledged themselves to tolerance and to campaigning without any act of intimidation in the run-up to the election on 3 August.

The parties will be up against 87 registered independent candidates who will sign the code of conduct in due course. By signing the code of conduct political parties, their agents and candidates, as well as independent candidates, commit themselves to adhering to the code until the election results are officially announced.

Meanwhile, applications opened on 10 June for special votes for the 2016 municipal elections and will close on 8 July at 17:00. Special votes are available to all registered voters who are unable to visit their voting station on Election Day on 3 August.
