Company denies assault

VUSI RADEBE, a former employee of the Cybko security company, is one of the three men claiming to have been kidnapped and assaulted by employees of the Zero Tolerance security company. Radebe and one other man were allegedly attacked on Thursday, 19 May, at about 03:00. A third man was allegedly assaulted later that morning.

The three men led a protest for the immediate removal of influential councillors in the Dihlabeng Local Municipality.

“I was brutally beaten. They said I was vocal during the march, claiming that I didn’t want Zero Tolerance as the municipal security company,” Radebe said.

Papi Leqheku, convener of the march, said they were going to meet with the community to show them what the security company’s employees had done.

Tefo Montsitsi, owner of Zero Tolerance, denied anyone had been assaulted. He said it was not policy to assault people.

“People can voice their problems just like the Constitution states. But they don’t have to commit any criminal activities. When there is a criminal activity, that is where we come in. One of our duties is to make sure that there is peace in the community and to protect municipal property and the officials,” Montsitsi said.

He admitted that the three had been arrested by the security personnel and handed over to the police.

Zweli Mohobeleli, Bethlehem police spokesperson, confirmed that two cases of kidnapping and assault had been registered.

“Two males, aged 37 and 58, allege that they were kidnapped and assaulted by a group of security officers in Bohlokong on Thursday. A cellphone belonging to one of the victims was also allegedly taken,” Mohobeleli said.

“Suspects have not been arrested yet, as they are still to be identified.”
