Criminals pose as electricians

2016-05-11 06:00

POLICE in Bloemfontein have issued a warning to the public to be vigilant after three or more home owners had fallen victim to criminals posing as electricians. These smooth operators made off with valuable items. The incidents were reported in Universitas and Fauna.

Capt. Chaka Marope, spokesperson of the Park Road Police, said they were investigating two cases, after two men and a woman had made off with people’s valuable items. He said the suspects had misled their victims by posing as electricians assigned by Centlec to monitor homeowners’ electrical boxes.

The suspects reportedly carried toolboxes and were dressed in blue overalls identical to those used by the electricity company.

“They asked permission to enter and be shown the type of bulbs currently in use in the house. They pretended to be working. As soon as the occupants relaxed, they penetrated into other rooms, where they stole laptops, cellphones, handbags or any other valuable items from the house.”

The police are investigating two cases in which similar methods were used. They urged house owners to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
