The Kopanelo Care Centre in Galeshewe has produced and displayed two of their first hand-crocheted blankets that they plan to donate to local homes for the elderly as part of initiatives on Mandela Day (18 July).

The blankets are crocheted by the beneficiaries of the centre’s soup kitchen, which was erected in Kagisho earlier this year.

The founder of the centre, Rev. Dennis Thole, is proud of the hard work put into the project despite the daily challenges they face in completing the blankets.

According to Thole, they aim to donate at least 15 xhong (a local name use to describe hand-made blankets) as part of an initiative on Mandela Day.

According to Thole, the crocheting project started in January this year, but was delayed by the shortage of wool.

The first two blankets were made possible through the donation of wool from businesses such as Smiley Salon, DingFong and Pick ’n Save.

The crocheting is done at the centre during operating hours on Tuesdays and Fridays.

“Although the woman cannot come to the centre every day, the members have shown commitment to the project by going the extra mile in doing some of the work at their own homes,” says Thole.

“We are in dire need of more wool and cloth cuttings in order to make a difference in the lives of elderly people. As we are already approaching winter, the blankets will make a huge difference, as they will be able to cover their feet and knees while sitting.

“We therefore appeal to local businesses to come on board and turn this into a real community initiative through working together.”

He is convinced that the blanket project will be a good start towards a good working relationship with the community at large and local businesses.
