The Northern Cape Department of Education celebrated Mandela Day in Batlharos in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District.

Representatives of the department brought change to the Monare family by donating groceries and toiletries.

They also empowered Mapaseka Sekukunene, a member of the family, by employing her as an intern data capturer at the Department of Education’s district office.

The department also donated groceries to the value of R5 000 to the Omogolo Women in Action Soup Kitchen, a community-based undertaking, which provides a decent meal to more than 100 elderly in the community.

The centre battles financially and experiences challenges with the water supply.

A vegetable garden was established in partnership with Sedibeng Water, and it is expected to benefit the whole community.

The Gasegonyane Local Municipality joined in by erecting a tap on the premises in an effort to equip the broader Batlharos community for a better future.

As part of the ongoing Mandela outreach projects, the department promised to distribute 3 000 pairs of school shoes to deserving learners across the Northern Cape in August.
