“A CAR is like a fully loaded gun. If not handled carefully, it will kill many innocent people,” said Lindi Mthombeni, general manager of Eskom’s Free State Operating Unit.

On Monday, 23 November, Eskom joined forces with various stakeholders, who are passionate about road safety, to promote road safety awareness amongst the utility’s staff, ahead of the festive season.

Stakeholders include ER24, Mercedes-Benz, the Department of Transport, the South African Police Service, Vodacom, TyreTrack and Drive Cam.

The campaign forms part of Eskom’s continuous efforts to reach Zero Harm to its staff, the public and the environment. The intention is that staff act as guardians and promote safety awareness amongst their families and friends.

According to ER24’s Sidney Venter, there is no room for taking risks when driving. Venter said he and his team daily see the immense regret experienced by someone who has caused an accident resulting in the death of another person. “Talking on cell phones or texting while driving, not wearing seat belts and speeding, remain some of the top causes of road fatalities.

“Don’t let your kids manipulate you into not wearing seatbelts. Fasten them to their seats in the correct way,” said Venter, adding that it could be the difference between life and death for your child.
